Kawasaki Racing Team’s Mickael Maschio topped the podium once again on Sunday by winning the Grand Prix of Bulgaria at Sevlievo, round five of the twelve round world championship. Maschio lost an early lead to Dutchman Marc De Reuver but at half distance after piling on the pressure for several laps retook the lead to romp to an easy victory and score 25 points. The battle for the 125cc world title now enters new phase with five of the twelve rounds gone, the main title contenders have established themselves and only four points separate the top four positions. Reigning world champion, Maschio is lying fourth after failing to score any points at round 2 in the bottomless sand of Valkensvaard in Holland, the top two places are tied between Ramon and De Reuver with Andrea Bartolini on the four stroke Yamaha trailing them by just a single point.
Mickael Maschio suffered a disaster at Sevlievo in 2002 when he suffered a high speed fall off a jump, he still has unhappy memories, “ I really like this track it has a lot to offer, I just wanted to put last year out of my mind and focus 100% on the race ahead of me. I had an easy qualification race which set me up for the GP. I made a good start from a perfect pick on the start gate, I chose just in from the inside line. I made a good reaction, De Reuver and I had a good race during the first few laps, I really enjoyed the race, it was clean and fair, just a clean battle but when I changed a few lines I found more speed and was able to take over the lead and pull away.
After taking over the lead on lap nine he led until the chequered flag fell some twelve laps later. “I had the race in control after passing De Reuver, except for one or two places were Andrea Bartolini had some better lines, I knew that he was closing but I didn't want to change lines mid race. I am the only guy from the top four that has suffered a dnf, I know that with more riding I could quickly get back up to pace after my early season wrist injury, despite this I am only four points off the lead, I am coming back to full strength, I am having less and less problems with my wrist now so this result has brought me back into contention and let the others know that that they still have to include me in the overall picture." said Mickael.
Yamaha YZ 2004
After introducing the YZF400 some years ago, Yamaha is setting the pace in fourstroke technology. Bud the competition from Japan and Austria is pushing. Will the blue bike squad still be up in front? The first check of the 2004 bikes from their pres release looks good and don't forget the twostrokes, they are still there!
Check the press release database.
New for 2004:
All-new, lightweight 48mm inverted Kayaba cartridge fork features 11.8" of travel with compression and rebound damping adjustability. Special coating on fork reduces stiction while giving “factory” appearance.
Lightweight front and rear calipers with aluminum pistons and revised front master cylinder combined with 250mm fully floating front and 245mm rear disc deliver strong stopping power with progressive control and feel.
All-new, upper triple clamps feature an anodized finish for “factory” look.
All-new, “gripper-style” seat cover offers excellent feel and control.
All-new, wide, cleated, folding titanium footpegs are lightweight and provide excellent comfort, grip and ground clearance.
Redesigned clutch (kick pinion gear now separated from the primary driven gear) for smoother clutch engagement.
Revised digital CD ignition system delivers ultra-precise spark and timing for faster, stronger engine response during hard acceleration and less kickback during starting.
Engine:
Liquid-cooled, 449cc, 5-valve, DOHC, 4-stroke with titanium valves features 63.4mm stroke delivering flat, broad torque curve (for instant hook-up) with high over-rev capacity and crisp, linear throttle response. 39mm Keihin FCR flat-slide carburetor with throttle position sensor (TPS) delivers ultra-precise fuel/air mixing and instant throttle response.
Lightweight crankshaft keeps inertial mass to a minimum for faster-revving low-rpm response.
Piston features short skirt and smaller pin boss diameter to help reduce weight.
Lightweight titanium valves and load-reduced springs are super-light, minimizing reciprocating mass for fast-revving, hard-hitting power delivery across the rev range. Additional weight-saving engine features include: small-design cam chain tensioner and oil pump; aluminum oil hose; all-titanium exhaust header, flange, bracket and heat shield; and light CDI ignition unit.
Primary kickstarting (with automatic decompression and convenient handlebar-mounted hot start lever) ensures easy restarts.
Redesigned airbox features all-new retaining bracket for improved sealing.
Smooth-shifting 4-speed transmission delivers engine’s potent powerband to the ground with maximum efficiency and hook-up.
Large-capacity radiator provides outstanding cooling efficiency.
Trick, works-style clutch lever features oversize barrel adjuster for easy, on-the-fly adjustability of lever/cable play.
Chassis/Suspension:
Super-strong frame is lightweight and laterally rigid for minimal flex and razor-sharp handling. Tapered swingarm is light and rigid for compliant rear suspension action. Recalibrated front fork settings deliver improved damping force with less bottoming for a smoother, more compliant overall stroke.
More weight savings come via two-piece (part aluminum, part plastic) engine protector plates and thin-walled engine guard construction.
Removable aluminum rear subframe constructed of square-section pipe for light weight and easy maintenance.
Rear suspension system features fully adjustable Kayaba shock with 12.4" of travel and separate adjusters for high- and low-speed compression damping.
Lightweight front wheel hub reduces unsprung weight and increases durability.
Premium Dunlop 739 knobbies offer unbeatable, competition-spec traction and excellent wear.
Lightweight 21" front and 19" rear Excel rims are exceptionally durable and reduce unsprung weight. Additional Features: Cleated rear brake lever and folding shift lever tip offer superb grip and excellent durability. Repackable exhaust silencer. Durable, comfortable handlebar grips. Stainless steel clutch cable for longer life.
